Soneva Kiri – Benz’s Restaurant

We were treated to a magical 3 nights at Soneva Kiri on Koh Kood. The island is just a few hours east of Bangkok but you feel a million miles away. One of our nights there was spent dining at Benz’s restaurant. It was a luxurious and incredible, 8-course meal of seemingly-simple but complex and wonderful Thai food.

เมี่ยงคำ – Miang kham – “One bite wrap”

Piper sarmentosum leaves are used to wrap a selection of ingredients and popped into the mouth as one, perfectly balanced bite of food. It represents all of Thailand’s key food flavours. Bitter, sweet, salty, sour, spicy.

Filled with roasted coconut shavings, shallots, fresh red bird’s eye chili peppers, ginger, garlic, lime (including the peel), chopped unsalted peanuts, and small dried shrimps. Before wrapping, the filled leaves are topped with palm syrup which has been cooked with lemongrass, galangal, ginger and fish sauce.

Just amazing!
